Sitafloxacin (Gracevit®) : an oral fluoroquinolone antibiotic inhibit bacterial DNA replication. Its targets are DNA gyrase and topoisomerase. In vitro study, sitafloxacin showed broad spectrum activity against gram negative, gram positive, anaerobic bacteria, and atypical pathogen. Surprisingly, sitafloxacin had effective activity against many superbugs including methicillin-resistant S.aureus(MRSA), methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci(MR-CNS), and carbapenem-resistant A.baumannii.
Although, Salmonella, Shigella, and Vibrio are the most common pathogens of bacterial gastroenteritis, shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli(STEC) infection has increased. The symptoms of STEC gastroenteritis are mild diarrhea, bloody diarrhea(because of hemorrhagic colitis), and may be progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome(HUS). Because it is quite impossible to detect STEC in all stool samples, the clinical and epidemiological criteria could be applied.
